Museum story
The Nationaal Militair Museum at Soesterberg was created by bringing together the collections of the former Army Museum in Delft and the Military Aviation Museum at Soesterberg. The merger preserved two major national collections in a purpose-built institution located on the former Soesterberg Air Base, and the museum now forms part of the Royal Defence Museums foundation.
Its scope is intentionally wider than armor. The museum interprets the military history of the Netherlands through objects and personal stories from the distant past to the present, which means tanks and armored vehicles sit alongside aircraft, weapons, uniforms, art, documents, and other evidence of Dutch military experience.
Collection character
The NMM reports more than 300,000 artifacts, the largest military collection in the Netherlands. Only part of that collection is physically displayed, while a major depot and digital catalog preserve access to additional vehicles and objects. For armor research this is valuable because individual catalog records can distinguish displayed vehicles from stored examples and can preserve registration numbers and other identifying details.
What to expect
The museum combines a large central display space with themed rooms, interactive interpretation, outdoor areas, and the landscape of the former air base. Armor is one part of a broader national story, so a visitor seeking tanks alone will encounter fewer vehicles than at a dedicated tank museum, but each vehicle benefits from the museum’s wider military context and strong object documentation.
