Renault FT

The Renault FT was a French light tank with a two-man crew, an engine compartment at the rear, and a fully rotating one-man turret.

Overview and designation

The Renault FT was a French light tank with a two-man crew, an engine compartment at the rear, and a fully rotating one-man turret. It combined a compact tracked hull with either a machine gun or a small cannon, and was intended for employment in numbers alongside infantry. Its importance lies in that arrangement, its production scale, and its influence on later armored forces—not in being the first tank to enter combat. Sources

The accounts distinguish the char mitrailleuse, armed with an 8 mm Hotchkiss machine gun, from the char canon, carrying the 37 mm Puteaux SA 18 gun. Specialist vehicles included the TSF wireless tank and the 75 BS close-support vehicle. Turret construction, training hulls, and later modifications add other configuration distinctions that do not all describe mutually exclusive vehicles. Sources

Renault FT is the proposed canonical title. FT-17 is a widely used alternative designation found in source titles and museum descriptions. The account regards the suffix as a later or retrospective convention. It does not justify changing original filenames, quotations, or institutional catalog titles to make their terminology appear uniform. Sources

Development and the production problem

The development story centers on Jean-Baptiste Estienne's advocacy of a small tank and Louis Renault's participation in turning it into a practical design. Rather than enlarging the heavy casemate-tank pattern, the FT concentrated the crew and armament in a small hull with a rotating turret. The intended advantages were numerous vehicles and a layout suited to infantry support. Sources

The account traces work during 1916 through a wooden mock-up and a prototype near the end of that year, followed by successive orders and changes in the intended armament mix in 1917. It also identifies a need to verify the precise contributions of the individual designers, including Rodolphe Ernst-Metzmaier, rather than attributing every design detail to a single prominent name. Production did not immediately match the scale of the ambition. Early quality, acceptance, and supply difficulties constrained deliveries. The eventual program involved several manufacturers and component sources. A familiar silhouette and a common family name consequently hide an industrial history of different turrets, manufacturing methods, contracts, and completion dates. Sources

Layout, crew, and protection

The driver occupied the front of the compact hull, with the commander above and behind in the turret and the engine at the rear. The rotating mount allowed the weapon to be directed without turning the whole hull. That advantage came with a substantial concentration of jobs in one man: the commander also observed, aimed, loaded or served the weapon, and directed the vehicle. Sources

The FT's small size and two-man crew therefore cannot be read as an unqualified ergonomic success. Limited internal space and observation remained important constraints. The design made a workable light fighting vehicle, but it did not remove the difficulties of command and weapon service under combat conditions. Sources

Published accounts give differing armor descriptions. One museum's training vehicle cannot safely supply the armor specification for a combat hull, while maximum figures around 22 mm and lower plate values describe different aspects of the account. A broad range is not a verified plate schedule for all FTs. The mild-steel NON PROTEGE training context is especially important when interpreting a preserved example or museum photograph. Sources

Weapons and turret identification

The two principal fighting configurations had different single main weapons: the char mitrailleuse carried the Hotchkiss machine gun, and the char canon used the 37 mm SA 18. Sources

Turret construction is a separate distinction. Accounts describe cast Girod turrets and riveted constructions associated with Renault and Berliet. Those forms can aid identification, but they are not established to correspond one-to-one with gun versus machine-gun armament. A vehicle can have attributes on both axes; counting each attribute as a different production total would multiply the same hulls. Sources

The specialist TSF replaced the ordinary fighting arrangement with a wireless installation and a fixed superstructure. The 75 BS carried a larger support weapon in its own specialized arrangement. Neither had the same configuration as the standard rotating-turret vehicle. Ammunition capacity remains deliberately unresolved in the cited sources where a reliable configuration-specific value has not been established. Sources

Engine, running gear, and mobility

The FT used a Renault four-cylinder petrol engine. The tank's nominal speed was low, with values around 7 km/h or 4.5 mph in the consulted summaries. Sources

Its tracks and rear tail were part of a compact approach to crossing damaged ground and trenches. The tail could assist the geometry of crossing an obstacle, but it did not make every trench passable. Transport, route selection, reliability, and the need for fuel and spares continued to govern how effectively the tanks could be brought into action. Sources

The FT's mobility is reported in the terms of the period and task. It was neither a high-speed pursuit tank nor immune to immobilization because it was smaller than a Schneider or Saint-Chamond. Published accounts describe low speed, limited endurance, and maintenance demands as qualifications to its battlefield utility, not as exceptions that can be omitted from the family account. Sources

Renault FT engine descriptions include approximately 35–39 horsepower and 35 CV. Differences in units and rating conventions prevent treating every number as an identical measurement. Sources

Production totals and specialist branches

The FT program included Renault, Berliet, Delaunay-Belleville, and SOMUA in the production network described by the account. The record carries several different totals: a figure of 3,177 by the Armistice in one narrative, 3,950 in a museum collection summary, other delivery figures in the available accounts, and an order quantity around 4,000 in a French museum description. These are not being averaged into a new number. Sources

A reliable final total requires explicit boundaries: ordered versus completed, accepted versus delivered, before versus after the Armistice, combat vehicles versus mild-steel trainers, and French production versus foreign copies. A very precise total without a definition would be less informative than the qualified evidence. Sources

The family inventory also records TSF vehicles, the 75 BS, training tanks, British command or liaison use, and the interwar modifié 31. Their reported quantities differ in character. An order for a specialist vehicle is not the same as completed production, and a later conversion is not another newly built hull. Approximately stated conversion or specialist totals remain provisional pending their production and acceptance trail. Sources

These branches warrant more than an indiscriminate list of names. The principal gun and machine-gun configurations need detailed child articles. The cited accounts do not firmly establish TSF and 75 BS. This history organizes that work but does not count those future articles as complete. Sources

French and Allied combat service

The references identify 31 May 1918 near Ploisy-Chazelle as the FT's first combat use, associated with the 501st tank regiment. It then follows expanding service through the Second Marne and the late-war offensives, including American employment at Saint-Mihiel and in the Meuse-Argonne. The cited accounts do not firmly establish exact place descriptions and unit returns. Sources

Its contribution depended on the combination of numbers, infantry cooperation, artillery support, transport, and maintenance. A rotating turret and a compact hull were important features, but they did not make an isolated tank invulnerable. The two-man crew also limited observation and command capacity during difficult fighting. Sources

The American Five of Hearts provides a documented individual-vehicle entry point in the available evidence collection. Its story can connect the FT family to American tank and infantry operations without treating a single action as representative of every FT's performance. A vehicle's name alone does not establish its crew, battle history, or honors. Sources

Published figures distinguish French and American wartime use from British liaison or command arrangements and the small Italian wartime acquisition described in the cited sources. Presence in a country's inventory does not, by itself, establish combat employment there during the same period. Sources

After the war, FTs and related designs appeared in numerous national armored programs. The cited accounts do not firmly establish Quantities, arrival dates, local modifications, and service endings. Sources

The American M1917, Fiat 3000, Renault NC developments, and early Soviet-related lines are connected through design or production history, but they cannot disappear into an all-inclusive FT total. The relationships include copies, further developments, influence, and transfers of actual vehicles rather than a single form of descent. Sources

The FT's legacy is therefore both technical and institutional. Its layout became highly influential, while its diffusion gave many armies practical experience with tanks. Accounts emphasize this influence without claiming that the vehicle was tactically flawless or remained adequate indefinitely. Its long afterlife is best explained by following the particular operators and modifications, not by compressing decades of use into a single undated specification. Sources

Photographs and configuration evidence

The account assembles wartime photographs, a period internal-layout diagram, a modern gun-tank view, and a TSF museum photograph. These serve different purposes. Historic views document context and equipment states; the diagram explains the machine-gun configuration; a preserved vehicle permits closer study but carries its own restoration and display history.
