M24 Chaffee

The M24 Chaffee was the most successful American light tank design to reach combat in the Second World War.

Historical overview

The M24 Chaffee was the most successful American light tank design to reach combat in the Second World War. It did not transform the late-war battlefield in the way that the M4 Sherman or Soviet T-34 did, because it arrived too late and in too small a proportion of U.S. light-tank units to replace the Stuart before V-E Day. Its importance is instead structural: it shows how the U.S. Army finally accepted that a reconnaissance tank required more than speed and a small gun. The Chaffee preserved the automotive simplicity of the M5 line where possible, but moved to a lower, sloped hull; torsion-bar suspension; wider tracks; and a 75 mm gun with Sherman-compatible ammunition and ballistics. The tank mattered because it solved the immediate Stuart problem without trying to become a medium tank. The earlier T7 replacement program failed when it grew from a light tank into the M7 medium tank and lost the rationale for its existence. The T24/M24 kept weight under control and accepted the compromises inherent in a light tank: armor was thin, mine protection was limited, and the 75 mm M6 was no substitute for medium-tank or tank-destroyer firepower against heavy armor. The result was a fast, roomy, mechanically reliable reconnaissance and light-combat vehicle, not a miniature Sherman. Sources

The most important variants and derivatives are the production M24 light tank; the T24 and T24E1 prototypes; the M19 twin 40 mm multiple gun motor carriage; the M37 105 mm howitzer motor carriage; the M41 155 mm howitzer motor carriage; and postwar national upgrades such as Norway’s NM-116 Panserjager and NM-130 recovery vehicle. These derivatives are best understood as M24-chassis vehicles rather than tank variants counted within the 4,731 M24 tank total. Sources

Development and variants

Published accounts describe the M24 as a full tank family rather than as a single production variant. The central vehicle is the U.S. Light Tank M24 Chaffee, introduced in 1944. Included are the T24 and T24E1 development vehicles, the production M24, the wartime and immediate postwar light-combat-team derivatives built on modified M24 chassis, major postwar upgrades and export rebuilds, and the operational history of the type in U.S. and foreign service. Excluded from the family are the M41 Walker Bulldog and later U.S. light tanks, except where they replaced the M24 or illustrate a design lineage. The T7 Light Tank / M7 Medium Tank is treated as a predecessor and boundary issue, not as an M24 variant. Sources

The Chaffee’s gun was substantially better than the Stuart’s 37 mm weapon, but the vehicle remained a reconnaissance/light tank in doctrine and protection level. Treating it as a medium tank because it carried a 75 mm gun is misleading. Sources

Design and performance

The M24 used the classic American front-drive layout: driving compartment at the front, fighting compartment and turret in the center, and engine compartment at the rear. The U.S. Army technical manual describes an armored full-track combat vehicle with dual controls, a front steering/braking differential, final drives at the front, and two engines feeding hydramatic transmissions and a transfer unit. The normal operational crew was five, though the manual preserved a four-or-five-man arrangement in which the assistant driver could move to the turret as loader. Sources

Armor was light by design. Secondary sources and museum summaries generally list maximum armor around 38 mm at the gun shield, with hull and turret plates around one inch in key areas. The technical manual gives a more detailed welded armor scheme with sloped one-inch frontal and side plates and thinner roof, floor, and rear plates. The practical result was protection against small arms, shell splinters, and some light weapons, but not reliable protection against anti-tank guns, mines, or enemy tank guns. Sources

The commonly cited M24 ammunition load is 48 rounds of 75 mm, 440 rounds of.50 caliber, and 3,750 rounds of.30 caliber ammunition. Wet stowage was requested during testing, and technical-manual stowage drawings show underfloor ammunition containers. Combat reports nevertheless complained that the 75 mm ammunition supply could be expended quickly in active fighting. Sources

The M24 was powered by two Cadillac V-8 gasoline engines at the rear. The Army manual identifies Cadillac 44T24 engines with hydramatic transmissions, a transfer unit, controlled differential, and front final drives. Some narrative sources describe the installation as a continuation of the M5’s dual Cadillac engine concept. This continuity helped Cadillac move quickly, while the improved transmission and suspension addressed some limitations of the older light tank. Sources

Production, operators, and combat record

M24 production was an American late-war industrial acceleration rather than a long, mature production run. Cadillac designed and produced the vehicle, while Massey-Harris was added as a second manufacturer. The Army Historical Foundation states that production began in April 1944, expanded after M5A1 production ceased, and ended in August 1945 after 4,731 vehicles. The Tank Museum independently gives the same production total and identifies Massey-Harris in Milwaukee as the shared production site. Sources

Production bottlenecks are less clearly documented in accessible public sources than the development timeline. The most visible production issue is timing: although the M24 began production in 1944, shipping, training, unit conversion, and the sudden Ardennes offensive meant that only limited numbers fought before the end of the war in Europe. British deliveries were also late; The Tank Museum notes that British Chaffees arrived in April 1945 and saw very limited wartime service. Sources

Allied wartime use was limited by timing. Published accounts describe Britain and Free French use, while The Tank Museum states that a very small number reached the British Army in April 1945 and saw limited wartime service. France became a major postwar operator and used M24s extensively in Indochina, including the battle of Dien Bien Phu, and later in Algeria. Sources

Postwar export service was broad. The Army Historical Foundation notes that the M24 went to the armies of many U.S. allies and that France and South Vietnam were among notable recipients. The Tank Museum summarizes export reach as at least 24 countries and notes that some examples remained in service into the 1990s. Later national modernizations, especially Norway’s NM-116 and Uruguay’s long-lived rebuilds, mean the family’s operational life stretched decades beyond its U.S. retirement. Sources

Legacy and historical evidence

Strategically, the M24 was easy to produce relative to heavier vehicles, mechanically familiar to Cadillac-trained maintenance systems, and flexible enough to support a specialized chassis family. Its battlefield value was highest when used for reconnaissance, security, pursuit, infantry support, and light armored fire support; it was lowest when forced into frontal tank combat. Sources

Doctrinally, the Chaffee reinforced the idea that reconnaissance armor needed enough firepower to survive contact but not enough weight to become a compromised medium tank. The later M41 Walker Bulldog replaced it in U.S. service, but the M24’s long export life shows that for many armies a reliable light tank with a useful gun remained attractive long after it was obsolete by superpower standards. Surviving vehicles are common enough to shape public memory. Museum and monument examples include running restorations, static memorials, Korean War and Indochina-related images, and specialized M24-chassis vehicles in artillery or armor collections. This creates a photo-research challenge: many available images are restorations, monuments, or postwar rebuilds rather than wartime production vehicles. Sources
