AMX-13

The AMX-13 was a French light tank family begun in 1946 and brought into service in the early 1950s.

Historical overview

The AMX-13 was a French light tank family begun in 1946 and brought into service in the early 1950s. It embodied a postwar French solution to a difficult requirement: a small vehicle that could deliver high anti-armor firepower while remaining light enough for reconnaissance and planned airborne support. The AMX-13 was an excellent export and reconnaissance/fire-support platform when used within its limits, but a poor substitute for a medium tank or MBT in open battle. France emerged from the Second World War needing to rebuild its armored-vehicle industry, reassert independent design capacity, and equip a modern army while relying temporarily on foreign and legacy vehicles. The Tank Museum notes that the French armaments industry was suppressed during the German occupation and revived quickly after the war; by 1946, work had begun on a range of new vehicles including the AMX-13. The defining feature was the oscillating turret. Its lower part traversed conventionally while the upper part, carrying the gun rigidly, elevated and depressed as a unit. Secondary weapons usually comprised a 7.5 mm or 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and, depending on operator and variant, an optional additional machine gun or smoke grenade launchers. The classic autoloader used two six-round revolver magazines in the turret bustle. First production AMX-13/75s carried 37 rounds. AMX-13/90 sources report 32 or 34 90 mm rounds. Early tanks used the SOFAM Model 8Gxb eight-cylinder gasoline engine rated at about 250 hp with a SOMA Minerva manual gearbox. Range varies by source and configuration: about 350-400 km for earlier gasoline vehicles and up to 572 km for a Forecast International Model 1987 configuration. Radio fit varied by country and modernization standard. Singapore’s SM1 program included a sealed radio harness and modernized electrical fit; similar national upgrade packages often altered radios independently of gun and engine changes. Sources

Baseline protection was conventional armor plus smoke dischargers. The family generally lacked true MBT-level passive protection, stabilization, and NBC protection; add-on armor kits and late modernization packages improved protection but could not change the basic light-tank premise. The chassis earned a reputation for toughness and adaptability, but the oscillating turret and autoloader introduced specialized maintenance burdens. Singapore’s SM1 upgrade specifically targeted reliability, range, acceleration, and cross-country mobility by replacing the engine, transmission, suspension, electrical, cooling, and wiring systems. Production, operators, and combat record

The program was sponsored by the French Ministry of Defense through the Direction Technique des Armements Terrestres and the French Army. Forecast International identifies AMX at Issy-les-Moulineaux as original developer, Atelier de Construction Roanne as initial manufacturer, Creusot-Loire as the later program holder, and GIAT as the subsequent industrial parent. Forecast International gives 3,128 AMX-13 light tanks as of 1 January 1997, explicitly excluding VTT/VCI, Mark F3, and other derived vehicles. Published accounts describe “7,000+ family often cited,” and Tank-AFV gives 7,700 built. The most defensible resolution is that 3,000-3,128 refers to tanks under narrower counts, while 7,000-7,700 likely includes broader family, export, conversion, or derivative counting. Cost data are sparse. Forecast International gives a last known sale for an AMX-13 with 105 mm cannon as $1.398 million in equivalent 1991 U.S. dollars and estimates $1.606 million in equivalent 1997 U.S. dollars if production resumed. French employment: France used the AMX-13 in Cold War formations and in limited decolonization contexts. Tank-AFV describes a French reconnaissance doctrine in which AMX-13 platoons alternated firing and withdrawal so that one element could reload while another covered.
