Leopard 1

The Leopard 1 emerged from the late-1950s Standardpanzer effort and entered Bundeswehr service in September 1965.

Historical overview

The Leopard 1 emerged from the late-1950s Standardpanzer effort and entered Bundeswehr service in September 1965. The Leopard 1 was not designed to be the best-armored tank of its generation. Bundeswehr history identifies Leopard as the first Bundeswehr equipment item with an animal name; later Gepard, Biber, Dachs, and Leopard 2 continued the naming and chassis-family pattern.
