Museum story
The Australian Armour & Artillery Museum opened to the public in 2014 at Smithfield near Cairns. It is a privately owned museum built around the collection, preservation, restoration, and display of armored vehicles and artillery from the nineteenth century to the present, with a pronounced focus on the Second World War.
Its scale gives it a different character from a service museum or battlefield museum. The institution describes itself as the largest museum of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and the collection continues to expand through acquisition and restoration. That makes the site both a public exhibition and an active preservation environment.
Collection character
The museum reports more than 240 armored vehicles and artillery pieces. Its exhibit list covers tanks, tank destroyers, self-propelled artillery, armored cars, recovery vehicles, and unusual variants from many nations. The breadth is particularly useful for visitors comparing British, American, German, Soviet, and postwar designs in one place, while the restoration program gives context for how surviving vehicles are recovered and returned to display condition.
What to expect
This is a collection where the sheer density of heavy equipment is part of the experience. Visitors should expect large halls filled with vehicles rather than a small interpretive gallery. Because the museum actively restores vehicles and occasionally changes what is available, the official exhibit pages are the best source for checking whether a specific machine is currently present or undergoing work.
