M22 Locust

The M22 Locust began as the T9 airborne light-tank program, an effort to give airborne forces a vehicle that could be moved by the transport aircraft and gliders available during the Second World War.

An airborne tank shaped by the aircraft that had to carry it

The M22 Locust began as the T9 airborne light-tank program, an effort to give airborne forces a vehicle that could be moved by the transport aircraft and gliders available during the Second World War. This requirement controlled nearly every design choice. The tank had to be small and light enough for air movement, yet still carry a turreted gun, crew, engine, suspension and useful fuel. It was therefore not simply a conventional light tank made slightly smaller; it was a vehicle designed around an exceptionally restrictive delivery problem. Sources

American plans included carriage beneath a C-54 transport, which required the turret to be removed and carried separately. British use centered on the General Aircraft Hamilcar glider, large enough to land a complete tank. Those two methods belong in the article because they explain the vehicle’s compromises and the difference between American and British employment. They are delivery systems, not M22 variants. The development sequence from T9 to T9E1 and finally M22 incorporated changes intended to make the tank lighter and more practical. Marmon-Herrington became the production firm. The resulting vehicle could satisfy the physical airborne requirement, but the process also revealed a larger doctrinal problem: a tank light enough for 1940s air transport would enter combat with severe limits in armor, firepower, space and mechanical margin. The Locust’s history is therefore inseparable from the capabilities and hazards of the aircraft that carried it. Sources

Compact firepower with very little protection or reserve capacity

The M22 carried a 37 mm gun in a small turret and used a compact crew arrangement. It could provide more mobile firepower than airborne troops could otherwise land immediately, particularly against light positions, vehicles and infantry. The weapon did not make the tank capable of sustained combat against contemporary medium tanks or well-sited anti-tank guns. By 1944–45, the armor and gun were already marginal for direct fighting in a dense European battlefield. Sources

Light weight brought more than thin plate. The crew worked in a cramped vehicle with limited ammunition, restricted observation and little internal reserve for additional equipment. Automotive components and tracks had to survive landing shock as well as ordinary movement. A glider-delivered tank could be damaged before reaching the enemy, and a minor mechanical failure could become decisive if airborne troops lacked recovery equipment and spares. Sources

The article does not force one prototype dimension onto every vehicle. Its central technical assessment is instead clear: the Locust was a serious attempt to package a turreted tank inside an airborne delivery limit, and the very success of making it transportable created the vulnerability and reliability problems that restricted its usefulness after landing. Eight hundred thirty tanks, but no American combat deployment

The strongest production total in the cited sources is 830 vehicles, built by Marmon-Herrington during 1943–44. That is large enough to distinguish the M22 from a mere experimental handful, but production did not translate into American combat employment. The United States tested and trained with the type, yet did not field it in battle. The C-54 method’s need to carry the turret separately illustrates how awkward rapid tactical use could be. Sources

Britain received a substantial number of tanks for evaluation and airborne use. The cited accounts do not firmly establish the exact transfer, acceptance, training and disposal ledger. British experience with the Hamilcar offered a more direct combat-delivery method because a complete Locust could roll from the glider after landing. Even then, the aircraft, pilot, landing zone and tank formed one vulnerable system. A successful factory total did not ensure that vehicles would arrive intact, assemble as a unit or remain mechanically available. Sources

This difference between production and operational effect is the main lesson of the ledger. Hundreds of tanks existed, but only a very small group entered the type’s confirmed Second World War combat action. Without those categories, “830 produced” can misleadingly suggest an extensive combat record that the M22 did not have. Sources

Operation Varsity and the limits of glider-delivered armor

British forces used eight M22 Locusts during Operation Varsity in March 1945, the only confirmed Second World War combat employment accepted in the cited sources. Their Hamilcar gliders entered a dangerous landing environment, and several tanks were lost, damaged or delayed by the landing itself or by mechanical problems. The survivors could offer useful local fire support, but the operation demonstrated how little margin existed between successful delivery and immediate loss. Sources

Its combat history was limited rather than representative of a large operational fleet. Varsity does not prove that the Locust was generally effective or ineffective in every airborne scenario. It provides a small, specific case in which a handful of tanks faced glider hazards, scattered landings, enemy fire and difficult terrain. Vehicle-level and glider-level records are needed to identify which tanks landed, which were disabled, who crewed them, and what engagements they supported. Sources

The United States did not use the tank in combat, and no other wartime battlefield episode is accepted here. That distinction protects the article from recycled claims. The appropriate assessment is that the M22 could put armored firepower where ordinary tanks could not initially go, but at the cost of protection, reliability and delivery risk. The Hamilcar made complete-vehicle delivery possible; it did not erase the vulnerability of the glider or the tank after landing. Sources

Postwar dispersal and the enduring airborne-tank problem

The Locust became obsolete quickly as anti-tank weapons improved and airborne forces reconsidered how much armored capability could be delivered safely. Postwar vehicles were stored, transferred, scrapped, converted or demilitarized. Accounts record claims involving Egypt, Belgium and other users, along with possible combat in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, but exact quantities and operational details remain open. The M22’s legacy is larger than its battlefield record. It illustrates the recurring problem of airborne armor: aircraft capacity pushes designers toward a very light vehicle, while combat pushes toward more armor, firepower, fuel and crew space. Later systems would revisit the balance with better aircraft, parachute platforms, air-portable vehicles and anti-tank missiles.
