Development and design
Built on a chassis related to the BTR-D airborne carrier, Nona-S combined amphibious mobility with a turreted rifled gun-mortar. The hybrid weapon could provide high-angle mortar fire, flatter-trajectory artillery fire, and limited direct fire. 1, 2
Operational use
Airborne and air-assault units used the 2S9 from the 1980s onward, and the concept generated later wheeled and tracked gun-mortar systems. 1, 2

Nona-S is a major cross-role lineage case: its chassis belongs to the Soviet airborne armored-vehicle family, while its mission is mobile artillery rather than troop transport or infantry fighting. 1, 2
