2S19 Msta-S

The 2S19 Msta-S replaced the 2S3 as the Soviet and later Russian standard 152 mm tracked howitzer, combining a long-range gun with greater automation and modernized fire control.

Development and design

The design uses a tank-derived hull and a large turret with mechanized ammunition handling. Later Msta-SM variants added improved navigation, laying, and digital fire-control functions. 1, 2

Operational use

Entering service at the end of the Soviet era, Msta-S remained central to Russian self-propelled artillery and has been modernized repeatedly. 1, 2

Role and significance

Msta-S is the direct bridge between Cold War 2S3-era artillery and the more automated 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV generation. 1, 2
