Development and design

The 2S1 was widely fielded across the Warsaw Pact and exported around the world. Decades after introduction, upgraded examples remain in service with multiple armies. ^{1, 2}

Gvozdika became one of the defining Soviet self-propelled artillery systems and established the lighter end of a layered 2S-series that ranged from battalion support to very heavy long-range guns. ^{1, 2}
