Museum story

The American Heritage Museum grew out of the Collings Foundation’s acquisition of the Jacques M. Littlefield collection in 2013. The museum was conceived as a way to place that large concentration of tanks, armored vehicles, and military artifacts inside a chronological interpretation of American conflict rather than simply preserving them as stand-alone machines.

The result is a 66,000-plus-square-foot museum that connects military technology to the people who built, operated, opposed, and endured it. Its stated themes include the historical setting of American conflicts, the citizen soldier, and the role of technology and innovation. That combination makes the museum especially valuable when a visitor wants to understand not just what a vehicle was, but why it existed and how it was used.

Collection character

More than eighty tanks and major artifacts anchor the galleries, including American, German, Soviet, British, and Japanese equipment. The collection is particularly useful for comparative study because vehicles from opposing forces appear within the same broader narrative. The museum’s artifact catalog extends from Second World War armor through Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, the Gulf War, and more recent conflicts.

What to expect

The visitor experience emphasizes immersive scenes, chronological galleries, and interpreted artifacts rather than a warehouse-style display. Some vehicles are maintained as operational machines and can appear in living-history programs, while others are preserved as static artifacts. Anyone traveling for a particular tank should confirm its current display status with the museum because restoration work and event use can affect what is visible.
