Development and design
The vehicle uses a 52-calibre 155 mm weapon and automated loading equipment in a fully enclosed turret on a purpose-built tracked chassis. Japanese industry divided responsibility for the gun/turret and vehicle body. 1, 2

Type 99 systems entered JGSDF service from the end of the 1990s and continue to equip Japanese field artillery units. 1, 2
