T-155 Fırtına

Development and design

The T-155 Fırtına developed from the South Korean K9 architecture with Turkish gun manufacture, electronics and systems integration. Its relationship to K9 is an engineering lineage rather than proof that all components remained identical. The original production generation and the later Fırtına II modernization should be distinguished when discussing loading equipment, fire control, auxiliary systems and crew arrangements. ^{1, 2, 3}

Vehicle configuration

Fırtına follows the K9-derived front-engine, rear-turret layout, providing the volume needed for a long 155 mm gun, loading machinery, crew stations, ammunition, and electronics. Turkish adaptation changed important subsystems and integration details. The result shares ancestry with K9 but has its own production history, fire-control suite, national gun manufacture, and modernization path. ^{1, 2, 3}

The brochure identifies separate display units for the commander, gunner, loader and driver. Alongside the gun and turret drives, it lists propellant conditioning, an auxiliary power unit, air conditioning, day/night driving equipment and an automatic travel lock. The equipment list describes a crewed installation with several supporting subsystems; it is not an uncrewed turret specification. The listed package belongs in the later development history without retroactively changing the description of the original production generation. ²

Gun and ballistic performance

Turkish industry describes the Fırtına weapon as a 155 mm, 52-caliber howitzer. Published range figures depend on ammunition type, and barrel length alone does not establish either sustained output or compatibility with every round of the same caliber. The gun, approved ammunition and loading arrangement form a combined installation whose details should remain tied to the relevant production generation. ^{1, 2, 3}

Ammunition handling and sustained fire

MKE public material describes a high short-term rate of fire and a lower sustained rate, illustrating the distinction between burst performance and what a battery can maintain. Mechanical assistance reduces crew burden, but projectile handling, propelling charges, barrel heating, and resupply still impose hard physical limits. Sustained effectiveness depends on the whole support chain rather than the loading mechanism alone. ^{1, 2, 3}

Fire control and artillery networking

ASELSAN’s April 2025 VOLKAN 220/155 brochure lists an inertial-navigation/GPS installation, a ballistic computer, muzzle-velocity measurement and servo-controlled gun laying. Its automated handling claim concerns projectiles. That wording does not establish fully automatic handling of every propellant component, and the brochure is not a record of the equipment fitted to every earlier Fırtına. ²

Tracked mobility

The K9-derived automotive foundation gives Fırtına heavy tracked mobility suitable for mechanized formations. It accepts higher fuel and maintenance demand than a wheeled howitzer in exchange for better off-road movement and a protected platform carrying the entire gun crew and ammunition. This mobility also supports survival by allowing batteries to change firing positions rather than depend on static sites. ^{1, 2, 3}

Crew protection and survivability

The armored hull and turret protect the crew and electronics from fragments, small arms, weather, and some battlefield hazards. The vehicle remains too large and lightly armored to fight like a tank. Its protection works together with distance, concealment, rapid occupation of firing areas, and movement. An enclosed environment also places greater demands on ventilation, fire suppression, and technical maintenance of complex electronics. ^{1, 2, 3}

Support vehicles and logistics

Fırtına combines domestic manufacturing and subsystem support with a design that has foreign ancestry and imported components. MKE supplies the gun and ASELSAN provides fire-control equipment, while engines, transmissions and other assemblies have their own supply histories. Fleet support therefore depends on the configuration and supplier of each subsystem, as well as barrels, tracks, ammunition, repair facilities and trained maintainers. ^{1, 2, 3}

Operational service

Fırtına became part of Turkish tracked artillery service following its development and production program. Public industry descriptions provide more detail about the gun and electronics than about individual unit histories. A manufacturer's statement about operational use is not, by itself, a maintenance record or an independent evaluation of battlefield performance. Variants and modernization

Fırtına II is a later modernization branch rather than a new name for every original T-155. Changes to electronics, the turret working environment and ammunition handling must be identified by configuration. The 2025 VOLKAN brochure includes auxiliary power, conditioning systems and remote-weapon integration among its features, but does not establish a fleet-wide installation or delivery date. ²

Industrial context

The program links K9-derived vehicle engineering with Turkish participation in the large-caliber weapon, electronics and final integration. That division of work explains why Fırtına has a distinct production and modernization history. It does not establish that every automotive or weapon component is domestically produced, nor that later subsystems can be fitted to all earlier vehicles without modification. ^{1, 2, 3}

Historical place

The T-155 is a national development of a shared tracked-howitzer architecture. Its history connects the original K9-derived arrangement with Turkish gun and fire-control integration and the subsequent Fırtına II branch. The vehicle therefore belongs beside K9 in an account of design lineage, while its production generations require their own configuration descriptions rather than a single specification copied from the Korean system. ^{1, 2, 3}
