Development and design
After damage to Alkett production in 1943, Krupp adapted the Panzer IV chassis to accept a StuG-style superstructure and the long 75 mm StuK 40. The resulting vehicle retained the low silhouette and fixed-gun limitations of the StuG III while using a different automotive base. 1, 2
Operational use
StuG IVs served in assault-gun and antitank roles during the last part of the war. They never displaced the far more numerous StuG III, but they added another production path at a time when Germany was trying to extract maximum combat value from existing chassis. 1, 2
Role and significance
The StuG IV belongs beside the StuG III but should remain a separate profile because the chassis, industrial history, and production lineage are distinct even though the tactical concept and armament converged. 1, 2
