Italian designers sought a mobile antitank mount for the excellent 90 mm gun as heavier Allied tanks became a growing threat. Fitting that weapon on an M-series chassis required an unusually open rear gun platform.

Development and design
The result carried only a small ready ammunition supply on the vehicle, with additional rounds and crew support expected from an accompanying ammunition carrier. Armor was light and the fighting position exposed, but the gun itself had excellent antitank performance. 1, 2
Operational use
Only a small batch was built. Vehicles fought in Sicily and surviving examples were taken into German hands after the 1943 armistice, limiting the type’s opportunity to influence the wider campaign. 1, 2

The Semovente 90/53 is Italy’s clearest wartime purpose-built tank-destroyer design: gun power was prioritized so strongly that ammunition capacity and crew protection became secondary compromises. 1, 2
