M44 Self-Propelled Howitzer

Development and design

Built around components associated with the M41 light-tank family, the M44 carried a 155 mm howitzer in a rear fighting compartment. Early engineering problems delayed full fielding and required redesign before the system became operational. ^{1, 2}

Operational use

M44s served with the U.S. Army and several allied armies during the 1950s and 1960s. Their career was comparatively short as the Army moved toward the more successful M109 family. ^{1, 2}
