M42 Duster

Development and design

The M42 transferred the twin-40 mm air-defense turret concept to a chassis derived from the M41 Walker Bulldog. It lacked an integral radar, relying on optical engagement and external warning. ^{1, 2}

Operational use

In Vietnam the expected enemy air threat did not materialize, but Duster crews became highly valued for base defense, convoy protection, and direct fire against ground targets. ^{1, 2}

The Duster’s career shows how mobile air-defense guns can remain tactically useful even when the aircraft mission disappears, because high-rate cannon fire is valuable against many surface threats. ^{1, 2}
