Replacing the KV-based SU-152 with the newer IS chassis created a heavy self-propelled-gun family with better automotive commonality and room for either 152 mm assault firepower or 122 mm high-velocity guns.

ISU-152 variants emphasized a huge gun-howitzer useful against fortifications and armored targets, while ISU-122 versions used 122 mm weapons better suited to long-range direct fire.
