Museum story
Bastogne Barracks occupies a site directly tied to the Battle of the Bulge. Built in the 1930s for Belgian troops, the barracks later served as headquarters for the U.S. VIII Corps and then for Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe and the 101st Airborne Division during the December 1944 siege of Bastogne. The site became a Second World War interpretation center in 2010 and joined Belgium’s War Heritage Institute in 2017.
That history gives the vehicle collection unusual weight. Tanks and artillery are displayed in a place that was itself part of the campaign, so the machinery can be connected to the defense of Bastogne, the wider 1944-45 fighting, and the military infrastructure that supported the battle.
Collection character
The Mechanised Warfare galleries bring together Allied, German, Soviet, French, and British vehicles and artillery. A separate Battle of the Bulge gallery concentrates on vehicles and guns tied to that campaign. The site is also home to a major restoration center, where historic vehicles from the War Heritage Institute collection are conserved and returned to display or operating condition.
What to expect
Bastogne Barracks rewards visitors who want both battlefield context and preserved armor. Some restoration areas are accessible only during specific events or guided programs, while the permanent galleries provide the core visit. The strongest experience comes from combining the vehicles with the site’s command-post history and the broader landscape of the Battle of the Bulge.
