Development and design

Its fixed superstructure housed the ML-20S gun-howitzer and a five-man crew. The very large separate-loading ammunition limited the number of rounds carried and rate of fire, but each projectile delivered enormous explosive effect. ^{1, 2}

Operational use

SU-152s fought from 1943, including during the Kursk period. Popular memory emphasizes encounters with Tigers and Panthers, but its primary value remained heavy direct-fire assault support rather than specialized tank hunting. ^{1, 2}

Role and significance

The SU-152 established the Soviet heavy assault-gun concept that moved onto the newer IS chassis as the ISU-152 and related ISU-122. ^{1, 2}
