
Development and requirement
The Soviet Army developed the BTR-60 to replace earlier wheeled troop carriers with a vehicle offering better cross-country mobility and amphibious performance. The initial BTR-60P was open-topped, while later PA and PB versions progressively added overhead protection and a turret, reflecting the shift toward a more fully enclosed battlefield carrier. 1, 2
Design and fighting role
Eight driven wheels, central tire inflation, and amphibious propulsion gave the family strong road speed and useful cross-country mobility. The BTR-60PB mounted the familiar 14.5 mm KPVT and coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun turret, but troops still had to use roof hatches for much of their access, a serious drawback under fire. Twin gasoline engines also complicated the automotive layout. 1, 2
Service and evolution
BTR-60s were produced in large numbers, exported widely, and converted into command, air-defense-control, artillery, communications, and recovery vehicles. The design established a lineage continued by BTR-70 and BTR-80, each attempting to improve troop access, automotive reliability, and fighting capability. 1, 2
Archive boundaries
BTR-60 is kept separate from BTR-70 and BTR-80 because each marks a recognizable production generation. Specialist command and support versions remain within lineage unless their primary battlefield role warrants a separate profile. 1
