Historical overview
Chieftain was the British Army's principal main battle tank during much of the Cold War. It was conceived as a universal tank able to replace both the medium Centurion and the heavy Conqueror: the result was a vehicle with exceptional firepower, heavy protection for its day, and a doctrinal fit for NATO's defensive problem in Central Europe.
