Museum story
The Canadian Tank Museum is operated by the Ontario Regiment RCAC Museum in Oshawa and combines regimental history with one of Canada’s major collections of historic military vehicles. The museum traces its artifact collection to Ontario Regiment veterans after the Second World War, while the vehicle section developed from a group of Ferret scout cars acquired in 1979 and expanded over subsequent decades.
The institution treats the vehicles as part of a living regimental story rather than a separate technology collection. Static displays preserve uniforms, medals, weapons, documents, and other artifacts, while the vehicle section maintains and restores historic machines for public interpretation.
Collection character
Museum material describes a vehicle collection of more than one hundred military vehicles, with many maintained in operating condition. Canadian and British service vehicles are natural strengths, but the collection is broader and includes Allied, NATO, and former Warsaw Pact equipment. Restoration workshops and operational demonstrations are central to how the museum preserves these machines.
What to expect
Visitors can encounter both conventional museum galleries and a working heavy-vehicle collection. Special events are an important part of the institution because they allow selected vehicles to be demonstrated rather than only viewed statically. Anyone planning a visit around one exact tank should check the museum’s current program, since restoration schedules and operating events can change normal display arrangements.
