Development and design
The original TOS-1 used a T-72-derived chassis and a 30-tube launcher; the improved TOS-1A adopted a 24-tube launcher and longer-range rockets while retaining the heavily protected tracked platform. 1, 2
Operational use
The family has been used by Russian and export forces in multiple conflicts. Its short engagement ranges and intense target effects place it closer to assault support than conventional long-range multiple-launch rocket artillery. 1, 2
Role and significance
TOS-1 is a deliberate taxonomy edge case: it is rocket artillery on a main-battle-tank-derived chassis, not a tank and not an air-defense launcher. Its place in the archive is defined by battlefield mission rather than appearance. 1, 2
