Development and design

Iranian industry developed the system during the 1990s around a tracked chassis associated with the Boragh family and a 155 mm gun/turret arrangement resembling earlier U.S.-supplied M109s. ^{1, 2}

Operational use

The vehicle entered Iranian service as part of a broader effort to reduce dependence on imported artillery and support a domestic armored-vehicle industrial base. ^{1, 2}

Role and significance

Raad-2 is historically useful because it shows technology diffusion and adaptation: foreign chassis and artillery influences were recombined into an indigenous system suited to Iran’s logistics and production constraints. ^{1, 2}
