AMX-30 AuF1

Development and design

The artillery turret was designed as a largely self-contained weapon system mounted on the proven AMX-30 automotive base. Loading assistance and a fully enclosed crew compartment reduced exposure compared with open Cold War heavy guns. ^{1, 2}

Operational use

AuF1 systems equipped French artillery regiments and were exported. French units deployed the type on operations including the Balkans before newer systems took over many missions. ^{1, 2}

Role and significance

AuF1 is a classic cross-type chassis adaptation: an AMX-30 tank lineage transformed into artillery without confusing the resulting vehicle with a tank. ^{1, 2}
