The baseline Type 96 gave the PLA a 125 mm-gunned domestic MBT that was more powerful than previous 105 mm Type 80/88 vehicles. ODIN describes the Type 96 as armed with a fully stabilized 125 mm smoothbore gun and autoloader. Army Recognition describes the Type 96A main gun as a smoothbore 125 mm weapon with an autoloader of Russian 2A46M design. The evidence indicates that the family uses a Soviet/Russian-influenced 125 mm autoloaded armament architecture adapted to Chinese production. Standard secondary armament is normally described as one 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and one 12.7 mm roof-mounted anti-aircraft or commander's machine gun, with smoke grenade launchers on the turret.
