Tank, Mark IX

The Tank, Mark IX was designed to move infantry or supplies under armor rather than to fight as a conventional gun tank.

Overview and purpose

The Tank, Mark IX was designed to move infantry or supplies under armor rather than to fight as a conventional gun tank. It retained the long tracked form of British First World War heavy tanks but reorganized the interior around a central carrying space. Its formal tank designation therefore needs to sit alongside its functional identity: a specialized infantry and supply carrier. Sources

The project addressed a basic limitation of armored attacks. Tanks might enter a defended position while the infantry needed to occupy it remained exposed or fell behind. Carrying those men through the dangerous approach offered a potential answer, but transporting people inside an early armored vehicle created problems of its own. The Mark IX arrived too late to demonstrate a solution in combat. The account finds no confirmed battlefield employment and treats its importance primarily as an early protected-carrier experiment. The family includes the baseline carrier, a reported ambulance conversion with limited documentation, and the photographed amphibious vehicle usually called the Duck. Multiple the cited accounts entries for the same conversion do not represent additional vehicles. Sources

The infantry problem and development

British experience in 1916–1918 exposed a difference between breaking into a position and sustaining an advance. Infantry, engineers, ammunition and other support had to follow the tanks across ground that remained dangerous. Using ordinary fighting tanks as improvised passenger carriers brought heat, fumes, noise and cramped space; men transported in that way might be in poor condition when required to dismount. Sources

The Mark IX emerged from the same crowded development program that included improved heavy tanks, faster medium tanks and the Anglo-American Mark VIII. Accounts place its initiation in 1917 and associates its development with Rackham, while retaining a question over the rendering of his initials. Armstrong Whitworth's prototype work and the subsequent role of Marshall, Sons & Co. at Gainsborough refer to distinct categories rather than compressed into an unexplained single manufacturer. This chronology also matters when discussing Cambrai. The battle is useful evidence of the broader cooperation problem, but the published earlier development dates do not support describing the Mark IX as a project conceived only after Cambrai. Sources

Arrangement and passenger accommodation

Moving the engine forward helped create an open central compartment, while the transmission remained toward the rear. This was not an empty armored box. Mechanical connections and operating equipment still occupied space used by the passengers, and the engine was not isolated in a fully separated compartment comparable to a later personnel carrier. The usual capacity in the cited sources is four crew and up to thirty carried infantry, with a cargo load quoted as an alternative. Those figures do not add together as a claim that the vehicle simultaneously carried its maximum troop load and maximum freight. A larger passenger figure appearing in some accounts remains a capacity dispute, not another standardized variant. Sources

Side entrances and rifle loopholes offered access and the possibility of firing from within the vehicle. They did not make the interior comfortable or provide modern observation, communications or dismounting arrangements. Accounts emphasize the absence of proper seating and the effects of heat, noise and fumes. Protection on the approach had little value if the carried infantry arrived exhausted or incapacitated. Protection, weapons, and mobility

Representative summary figures are around twenty-seven tons, 4.3 mph and twenty miles of range, but these remain source-specific values rather than newly verified measurements. Sources

The carrier had machine guns rather than the large side gun sponsons of a Male fighting tank. Accounts describe two.303 machine guns and sixteen rifle loopholes. A loophole count is not a machine-gun count, and the possibility of passengers firing their own weapons cannot establish an independently mounted armament inventory. Sources

No secure ammunition allowance or standard radio installation is established in the technical account. The common family appearance also does not justify copying a heavy tank's armor or trench-crossing specification into the carrier without a Mark IX-specific reference. Sources

Mark IX used a Ricardo engine commonly rated at 150 hp, with a long rhomboidal track run and relatively light protection. Sources

Manufacture and the limits of service evidence

A much larger order belongs to the procurement history, not to the completed fleet. The treatment of prototypes, accepted vehicles, and conversions remains unresolved, and the evidence does not establish additional hulls that would reconcile the totals. Sources

A weekly return records three Mark IX vehicles in France for the week ending 17 November 1918. It establishes their reported presence on that date, not the arrival date of each vehicle. No confirmed combat employment is established. Sources

The ambulance account is weaker than the baseline carrier history. It remains a reported conversion requiring direct documentation of the vehicle, medical arrangement and use. A the cited accounts account can record a trial, evaluation or support role without proving that an operational unit used a distinct production ambulance variant. Sources

The Duck amphibious experiment

The Duck conversion explored a different problem: whether a tracked carrier could cross water. Its photographs show conspicuous flotation equipment and an altered exterior, making it visually distinguishable from the standard infantry carrier. Those images are valuable because they document a trial configuration rather than merely illustrating a proposed amphibious vehicle. Sources

Accounts associate the experiment with Hendon Reservoir, the Welsh Harp, on or about Armistice Day in November 1918. It also cautions that the nickname, detailed arrangements and exact trial circumstances require careful sourcing. Photographs of a vehicle afloat are evidence of the photographed event, not proof of an accepted amphibious transport system or routine service capability. Sources

The amphibious conversion was a specialized Mark IX development, not both a new production tank and an additional prototype solely because it appears under two descriptions. Detailed accounts of its trial difficulties remain uncertain. Sources

Legacy and illustration

The Mark IX made the protection of accompanying infantry a vehicle-design problem in its own right. Its rifle ports and troop compartment invite comparison with later mechanized infantry vehicles, but resemblance is not proof of a continuous technical lineage. The account favors a limited historical interpretation: an early experiment that identified an important requirement without demonstrating a mature battlefield system. Sources

The preserved vehicle and its interior photographs help explain why the idea was more difficult than simply adding armor around passengers. Their museum context is important. Visitor steps, display markings and the present state of internal fittings are not automatically evidence of the 1918 service arrangement. Sources

It cannot promise an ambulance photograph where none has been established, nor replace the uncertain details of that conversion with an apparently authoritative reconstruction. Sources
