In physical form, the Ikv 91 looked more like a light tank than earlier Swedish infanterikanonvagn vehicles: it had a fully rotating turret, a four-man crew, a 90 mm L/54 rifled low-pressure gun, and amphibious capability. Its technical signature was not armor, but terrain mobility and fire-control quality. The vehicle mattered because it was a national-design answer to Sweden's doctrine and geography. Sweden did not need a generic expeditionary light tank; it needed a relatively inexpensive, tracked, low-ground-pressure, amphibious fire-support vehicle able to support brigades in forests, marshland, river lines, and underdeveloped northern road networks. The Ikv 91 was a well-tailored Swedish niche vehicle. It offered excellent mobility, amphibious utility, and good sighting/fire-control features for its weight, but its thin armor and low-pressure 90 mm gun limited its late-service value against modern MBTs. Swedish armored doctrine after the Second World War developed under neutrality, conscription, severe geographic constraints, and a defense problem centered on national territory. Sweden needed forces able to delay, canalize, and destroy a mechanized invader in terrain that alternated between forest, water obstacles, marsh, snow, and limited road networks. The main battle tank was important, but so were cheaper vehicles that could provide infantry formations with direct fire without demanding heavy-bridge infrastructure or tank-regiment logistics. The immediate predecessor problem was obsolescence. By the early 1960s, Swedish infantry still operated older infantry-gun and assault-gun vehicles based on Second World War and early postwar technologies. This background explains the Ikv 91's apparent contradictions. The vehicle carried a relatively modern fire-control system and useful HEAT firepower, but it retained very light armor. The Ikv 91 sits at the edge of tank-family taxonomy. It was turreted, tracked, and armed with a tank-like direct-fire gun, and it has frequently been described internationally as a light tank. At the same time, the Swedish designation was not stridsvagn (tank) but infanterikanonvagn, and its job was infantry support and tracked anti-tank company firepower, not main battle tank action. Formal development began in 1964 when FMV issued requirements for the Ikv m/ny. The program sought to replace roughly 300 older vehicles in assault-gun companies with a common platform possessing improved anti-tank capability. The vehicle had to be affordable, amphibious, and useful in northern Swedish terrain. A 9 cm low-pressure gun was selected early because it could use modified ammunition from the Pvpj 1110 recoilless rifle and offered a practical compromise between gun weight, recoil, ammunition commonality, and anti-armor performance. Over a dozen concepts were studied, including conventional casemate vehicles, turreted light tanks, remote-turret concepts, autoloaded proposals, and even a fixed-traverse idea influenced by the Strv 103. Hägglunds' Alternative 1 initially promised ambitious features, including an autoloader and very high speed, but the design was simplified for a four-man crew. These are not necessarily contradictory: the dates can reflect ordering/delivery versus serial production. In 1971, one prototype was fitted with a 105 mm L7 gun in a provisional turret to examine whether such a weapon could be used on the light chassis. The source claims the hull roof required reinforcement but that accuracy was not reduced compared with Swedish Centurion tanks. The most important derivative was the Ikv 91-105 / Ikv 105 export prototype. After Indian trials in 1982 reportedly found the standard armament insufficient, Hägglunds developed a redesigned 105 mm version with a Rheinmetall Rh 105-20 low-recoil gun, stabilized armament, new turret, German MG3 machine guns, widened and lengthened hull features, external propellers, and a higher-output 380 hp version of the engine. Design and performance

The production Ikv 91 used a conventional light-tank-like arrangement: driver in the left front hull, turret and fighting compartment centrally placed, and engine/transmission at the rear. Commander and gunner sat on the right side of the gun, loader on the left, and driver in the front hull. The hull was a light welded-steel structure optimized for mobility, amphibious use, and low weight. WeaponSystems links the vehicle to a lengthened and rear-engined chassis lineage through Bgbv 82 and Pbv 302, while the archival development narrative emphasizes component commonality with Pbv 302 as a reason Hägglunds won the competition. The Ikv 91 had a fully traversing turret mounting the 90 mm gun. The preproduction prototypes reportedly had a larger commander's cupola; the production version adopted a reduced cupola because laser rangefinding removed the need for the earlier optical-rangefinding arrangement. The safest interpretation is that published summary thickness values, maximum plate values, and protection ratings are being mixed. The standard weapon was a 9 cm/90 mm L/54 rifled low-pressure gun, listed by WeaponSystems as the Bofors KV90S73 54-caliber rifled gun. It fired HE and HEAT ammunition and was selected for weight, recoil, muzzle-flash, and ammunition-commonality reasons. The low-pressure 90 mm system was chosen partly because it could share warhead lineage with existing Swedish 9 cm recoilless-rifle ammunition.
