Arsenalen

Arsenalen is Sweden’s military-vehicle museum and preserves a collection of roughly 350 vehicles, with a substantial rotating selection displayed in its base exhibition. The collection is particularly important for the development and service of Swedish armored vehicles from the interwar era through the Cold War and modern period.

Museum story

Arsenalen opened in 2011 near Strängnäs and is run by the Södermanland military historical collections foundation. It brought together vehicles formerly associated with the Swedish state’s tank museum at Axvall and the military vehicle museum at Malmköping, preserving them in a modern public setting.

The museum also connects the vehicles to local military history. Exhibitions cover the Södermanland Regiment and a preserved soldier’s croft, widening the story beyond vehicle design to the people and institutions that used military technology in Sweden.

Collection character

The collection contains about 350 vehicles, with roughly 75 on display at a time. Swedish designs are the defining strength, making the museum especially important for vehicle families that are poorly represented elsewhere. The display changes periodically, including themed rotations, so the museum can present a broader collection over time than the permanent hall alone would suggest.

What to expect

Arsenalen is one of the best destinations for understanding the distinctive path of Swedish armored vehicle development during the Cold War. Visitors should expect a curated selection rather than every vehicle in storage, with national prototypes, service vehicles, and unusual Swedish concepts sharing space with comparative foreign equipment. The official museum pages are the best source for current display rotations.
