The Comet was a British cruiser tank designed to put a high-velocity anti-tank gun into a vehicle still close enough to the Cromwell lineage to be produced quickly.

The Comet was a British cruiser tank designed to put a high-velocity anti-tank gun into a vehicle still close enough to the Cromwell lineage to be produced quickly. The Tank Museum describes it as a Leyland Motors design from 1943 based on the A27M Cromwell; Published accounts describe the family as a 1944-start vehicle because the running prototype, production deliveries, and service entry all fall in 1944-1945. Its importance was practical rather than strategic. British armored units had fielded Cromwells with the dual-purpose 75 mm gun, Sherman Fireflies with the long 17-pounder, and the taller A30 Challenger as an attempt to combine Cromwell mobility with 17-pounder firepower. The Comet used a more compact 77 mm HV gun, with the same nominal 76.2 mm projectile diameter as the 17-pounder but a different cartridge, making the gun easier to accommodate in a lower-profile cruiser tank. Production, operators, and combat record

Production is one of the central reconciliation points. Published accounts describe approximately 1,186 Comets and cites the Tank Museum. The Tank Museum narrative also says Leyland built 1,186 before production ceased in May 1945. However, the same Tank Museum page’s fact panel gives 1,201, while the National Army Museum gives 1,200. The production timeline was compressed: running prototype by February 1944, deliveries from September 1944, combat service in spring 1945, and production ending in May 1945. This left too little time for Comet to shape the wider war, even though it was technically successful. Sources

The British Army introduced Comet in 1945 and used it in Northwest Europe during the final months of the war. Its British service continued after 1945; the end of the wartime campaign was not the end of the tank’s operational life. Sources

Foreign operators listed by the Tank Museum include Burma, Finland, the Republic of Ireland, and South Africa. Secondary sources add Cuba and sometimes Somalia-related service narratives; those are retained as unresolved questions rather than well-documented the cited accounts-confirmed operators. Myanmar’s appearance of Comet A34 tanks in a 2021 Armed Forces Day parade is a modern ceremonial/survivor-status datapoint, not proof of contemporary combat utility. Sources

Comet’s combat history was real but brief. The vehicle entered service with 11th Armoured Division in spring 1945 and took part in final actions in Germany. Overall battlefield value: Comet combined credible firepower, useful mobility, adequate late-war protection, and a five-man crew into a balanced tank, but it came too late to be strategically decisive. It was superior to Cromwell in anti-tank combat, generally more successful as a 17-pounder-class cruiser than Challenger, and more integrated than the stopgap Firefly, but it was not a heavy tank and cannot be mythologized as invulnerable. Centurion, not Comet, became the durable postwar British tank line, but Comet demonstrated the design priorities that Centurion would pursue more decisively: a powerful gun, adequate armor, a full crew, and mobility sufficient for the combined-arms battlefield rather than maximum cruiser speed at all costs. Other survivors exist in Finland, Ireland, South Africa, Hong Kong, Germany, the United States, and elsewhere according to preservation literature and museum pages.
