Museum story

The Royal Tank Museum in Amman is a national museum devoted to armored warfare and Jordanian military history. It presents Jordan’s armored forces within a wider international story, using the country’s own conflicts, the Great Arab Revolt, regional warfare, and the broader development of tank technology as connected themes.

The museum’s stated mission is to collect, restore, preserve, and exhibit tanks and armored vehicles while explaining the role of the Jordan Armed Forces in the creation and defense of modern Jordan. That regional perspective makes the museum especially valuable because it interprets familiar British, American, and Soviet-designed vehicles through Middle Eastern service rather than only through European or North American narratives.

Collection character

The museum reports more than 158 tanks and a 20,000-square-meter facility. Its exhibition is arranged chronologically across seventeen halls, beginning with the origins of protection and early armored warfare before moving through the world wars, Jordanian military history, regional conflicts, and later armored technology. Vehicles such as Sherman, T-34, Centurion, and Challenger types appear as part of that larger progression.

What to expect

The Royal Tank Museum was designed as an interpretive visitor experience, not simply a vehicle storage hall. Multimedia, chronological storytelling, technical explanation, and regional history are integrated into the galleries. Visitors interested in the history of armor outside the usual Western European framework will find the museum particularly useful for understanding how imported vehicle families were adapted, operated, and remembered in Jordan and the surrounding region.
