Jaisalmer War Museum

Jaisalmer War Museum was established by the Indian Army to honor service and sacrifice while explaining operations in India’s western desert. Its halls, memorial features, aircraft, artillery, and captured armored equipment connect campaign history to the terrain around Jaisalmer and Laungewala.

Museum story

The Indian Army opened the museum in 2015 during the golden-jubilee commemoration of the 1965 war. It was conceived as a public tribute to soldiers and as an interpretive center for operations fought in the western desert.

The museum’s strongest geographic connection is to Laungewala and the 1971 campaign. Displays explain the actions of ground and air units while the surrounding desert helps visitors understand distance, visibility, mobility, and supply.

Collection character

The Indian Army and Laungewala halls combine photographs, documents, weapons, models, memorial material, and audiovisual interpretation. Outside, artillery, aircraft, Indian equipment, and captured Pakistani vehicles make the campaign’s material dimension visible.

The Museums of India record explicitly identifies a captured Pakistani Type 59 and an Indian T-55. Those objects are linked to the matching Armor Archive families; broader references to tanks and captured equipment are not converted into additional links.

What to expect

A visit works best as preparation for, or reflection on, a trip to Laungewala. The galleries provide a national Army narrative, while the equipment display gives visitors a tangible sense of the vehicles and weapons used in desert operations.

Allow time for both halls and the outdoor collection. Heat and sun can be significant, and schedules for audiovisual programming may differ from general opening hours, so verify details before arrival.
