Origins and design
The VBL was developed as a light armored scout vehicle for reconnaissance elements operating with French cavalry. Its small dimensions, amphibious heritage, and flexible weapon or sensor installations let it perform tasks that would be inefficient for larger gun-armed vehicles. 1
Operational use
French forces used VBLs widely on expeditionary operations. A regeneration program has upgraded vehicles to the Ultima standard so they can remain in service while newer reconnaissance fleets mature. 1
Reconnaissance role and lineage
The VBL belongs to the observation and screening side of the French reconnaissance family, complementing rather than replacing heavier AMX-10RC, Sagaie, and Jaguar-type vehicles. 1
