The EBR was one of the most technically distinctive postwar armored cars, designed for aggressive reconnaissance with strong firepower and the ability to reverse direction without turning around.

Origins and design
Panhard developed the EBR around French cavalry requirements for a fast, heavily armed reconnaissance vehicle. Four conventional outer wheels handled road travel while four metal central wheels could be lowered for rough ground, and a second driver faced rearward. 1
Operational use
EBRs equipped French armored cavalry during decolonization and Cold War service and were exported to other users. Their guns and oscillating turrets gave them substantial direct-fire capability while the vehicle remained doctrinally a reconnaissance platform. 1
Reconnaissance role and lineage
The EBR established a French tradition of gun-armed wheeled reconnaissance that later continued through the AML, ERC, and AMX-10RC branches. 1
