Origins and design
Panhard developed the ERC family in the 1970s as a six-wheeled reconnaissance platform. The Sagaie variant paired the chassis with a more capable 90 mm gun, giving a relatively light vehicle significant direct-fire power. 1
Operational use
France selected the Sagaie for rapid-deployment forces whose transport and infrastructure constraints made the heavier AMX-10RC less convenient. The type served in overseas operations before being progressively replaced by newer systems. 1
Reconnaissance role and lineage
The Sagaie occupies the light expeditionary branch of French gun-armed reconnaissance, complementing rather than duplicating the heavier AMX-10RC. 1
