Buk replaced and expanded the role of the earlier Kub system with a more capable tracked network. Individual TELAR vehicles combine missiles with their own engagement radar while other tracked elements provide search, command, and reload functions. 1, 2

Buk-M1, M2, and M3 generations progressively expanded target sets, range, electronics, missile performance, and simultaneous engagement capability while preserving mobile operation with ground formations. 1, 2
Role and significance
Unlike a single SPAAG, Buk is best understood as an armored air-defense family whose combat power comes from cooperating specialized tracked vehicles. 1, 2
