Origins and design
The Soviet requirement called for an amphibious armored reconnaissance vehicle with better obstacle-crossing performance than earlier wheeled carriers. The BRDM-1 combined four main road wheels with smaller retractable belly wheels to help cross trenches and broken ground. 1
Operational use
BRDM-1s served with Soviet and Warsaw Pact reconnaissance formations and became the basis for antitank and command variants. Their open weapon arrangements and limited crew ergonomics encouraged development of a more capable successor. 1

The vehicle begins the dedicated Soviet BRDM reconnaissance line that was substantially refined in the BRDM-2. 1
