Origins and design
Russia’s limited wartime automotive production led it to seek armored cars abroad. Austin designed a vehicle around Russian requirements, notably two separate machine-gun turrets that could cover different arcs and an enclosed armored body for crew protection. 1
Operational use
Successive Austin series served on the Eastern Front and during the upheavals that followed the Russian Revolution. Russian factories later rebuilt or produced improved hulls, creating the Austin-Putilov type and, in some cases, half-tracked Austin-Kegresse derivatives. 1
