Origins and design

The AMX-10RC emerged from French requirements for a highly mobile reconnaissance vehicle with much more firepower than light armored cars. A 105 mm gun and advanced fire-control equipment gave it the ability to engage targets at range while retaining wheeled operational mobility. 1, 2

Operational use

French units used the vehicle in expeditionary operations from the Gulf War onward. The RCR modernization improved protection and electronic systems as the vehicle adapted to changing threats. The Jaguar program is replacing the AMX-10RC and ERC-90 in French service. 1, 2

Reconnaissance role and lineage

The AMX-10RC shows how the reconnaissance category can overlap with direct-fire roles without becoming a tank: doctrine, mobility, and reconnaissance mission remain central to its identity. 1, 2
