The A6 precursors and the final Mark III
The Vickers Medium Mark III developed from the A6 effort to replace Britain's existing interwar mediums with a more capable tank. Its three-turret arrangement combined a central gun turret with two smaller forward machine-gun turrets. Published accounts describe the A6 prototypes as direct precursors, but not as an extra production batch of final Mark IIIs. Sources
Accounts distinguish three A6 experimental vehicles from three later Mark III tanks. Combining them into one production total would hide the design changes between the groups. The 1926 milestone concerns the requirement and concept; mock-ups, completed prototypes, trials, and limited employment followed later. Sources
A sixteen-ton requirement and successive experiments
The development brief sought a tank within a roughly sixteen-ton class, influenced by bridge and transport constraints, with a rear engine, improved fighting arrangements and provision for wireless. Accounts place an A6 concept in September 1926 and a model in March 1927. These targets and representations is distinct from tested vehicle performance. Sources
A6E1 and A6E2 followed as prototypes in 1928. Testing exposed difficulties in the machine-gun turret arrangement, suspension and automotive equipment. A6E3 introduced further changes rather than merely repeating the first pair. The source associates it with different suspension, revised smaller turrets and experimental powerplant possibilities, including an unusually high-output diesel claim that remains dependent on secondary accounts. The final Mark III was another stage. Published accounts describe the first two final vehicles to the Royal Ordnance Factory at Woolwich and the third to Vickers, with completion dates spanning 1929–1931. The program's industrial history therefore cannot be reduced to a single manufacturer's name and a single year without losing relevant distinctions. Sources
Three turrets, a radio bustle and crew workload
The final arrangement placed the main turret above the hull and two smaller machine-gun turrets forward. Rear engine placement helped distinguish the tank from earlier British medium arrangements. The main turret acquired a rear bustle associated with radio accommodation. A drawing showing intended wireless space or an aerial in an exercise photograph, however, does not establish every component fitted to every vehicle on every date. Sources
The preferred final crew figure in the cited sources is six, but seven appears in other summaries and in the early A6 design discussion. It is possible that precursor information contributed to the discrepancy, yet that is an explanation to test, not a proven correction. Crew numbers need to follow the actual configuration, particularly when separate machine-gun turrets impose their own manning and observation demands. Sources
Main armament was a QF 3-pounder of 47 mm, supported in the final account by three.303-inch Vickers machine guns. Earlier A6 proposals contained different machine-gun and anti-aircraft arrangements. A rear AA-turret concept is not established as an established fitting on all completed prototypes. Ammunition stowage and exact sighting equipment remain unresolved, and the source does not support a modern gun-stabilization claim. Sources
Accounts emphasize the difficulty of making separate weapons and their crews work effectively together. Changes in turret placement and size were attempts to improve a fighting arrangement, not simply cosmetic variants. An article about the tank needs to explain that practical command and crew problem alongside its distinctive silhouette. Sources
Protection, power and the suspension problem
Reported armor for the final Mark III is about 14 mm at the front and 9 mm elsewhere, compared with somewhat different A6 values. Those remain configuration-qualified descriptions rather than a complete plate map. The final tank was not a heavy breakthrough vehicle merely because it had several turrets; weight restrictions and mobility goals remained integral to the project. Sources
An Armstrong-Siddeley V8 of about 180 bhp is the common final-vehicle engine specification. The published commonly quoted final road speed of 30 mph, or 48 km/h, and range of 120 miles, or about 190 km, still require the relevant test basis and conditions. Sources
Suspension and track behavior remained serious difficulties. The program introduced alterations but did not produce a satisfactory combination of durable running gear, stable fighting platform and affordable manufacture. A faster engine or revised bogie was not by itself proof that the whole vehicle had become a practical service tank. Sources
Limited completion and command employment
The final Mark III total in the cited sources is three vehicles: two attributed to Woolwich and one to Vickers. They did not become a mass-produced successor fleet. The distinction between a prototype built, a tank converted for command work and a vehicle photographed in a new role remain clear in both production and variant records. Sources
Command and headquarters use during exercises forms an important part of their later history. The account cites film and photographic descriptions from the early 1930s and identifies at least one conspicuous command vehicle. An altered aerial arrangement can be documented as a configuration or use without creating a fourth manufactured Mark III. The program's experience belongs to the history of British mechanization even though no confirmed combat service is established. Sources
The vehicles’ individual fates remain uncertain. Accounts of retirement by 1938 conflict with an IWM description identifying T907, Medium Mk III E3, at Tidworth on 28 October 1940. Withdrawal from regular service, continued training use, and final disposal were different events, and their dates are not fully reconciled. Sources
Claims of a Thai purchase or license are not established by the core evidence and are not added to the operator list as settled facts. Relationships to foreign multi-turret designs, particularly the Soviet T-28, also need a documentary chain. A similar solution and awareness of British experiments do not by themselves prove literal copying or a licensed manufacturing program. Sources
What the photographs add
The three photographs show a workshop view, an overhead exterior view and a command-vehicle scene. They are valuable for comparing turret disposition and external fittings. The overhead photograph does not show a cutaway interior, and it cannot establish concealed radio components, ammunition arrangements or the complete mechanical installation. Sources
The workshop and command images are linked in the cited sources to IWM identifiers KID 4625 and MH 8102, with 1930 and approximately 1931 descriptions. The gallery also needs separate A6 imagery so that the predecessor and final vehicles can be recognized visually. Sources
The program is best presented as a sequence of problems, modifications and limited trials, not a tank whose development was completed simply because a final designation existed. Preserving the difference between the A6 precursors, three completed Mark IIIs and their changing command roles makes that sequence understandable without overstating its operational outcome. Sources
