Vickers-Carden-Loyd Amphibious Tank

The Vickers-Carden-Loyd Amphibious Tank attempted to give a very small tracked armored vehicle the ability to cross water without relying entirely on bridges or external ferries.

Overview and classification

The Vickers-Carden-Loyd Amphibious Tank attempted to give a very small tracked armored vehicle the ability to cross water without relying entirely on bridges or external ferries. Accounts place it in the British interwar light-vehicle development stream, with a two-man crew and machine-gun armament. Its importance was greater as an experimental and export design than as a standard British service tank. Sources

The A4E11/A4E12 and L1E1/L1E2 designations appear in accounts of development spanning 1930–1932. Their pairings, chronology, and exact engineering differences are not fully resolved; 1931 is not a firmly established service-introduction date for the whole group. Sources

Development problem and testing

The design combined the tankette-era interest in small, affordable armored vehicles with a more demanding mobility requirement. Tracks could provide movement over ground, but water crossings required buoyancy, propulsion and control in a different environment. Making a vehicle float was not the same as proving that it could enter and leave a river safely, carry its intended load and remain useful afterward. Sources

Accounts place Vickers-Armstrongs and the Carden-Loyd development lineage at the center of the project. Demonstration and press photographs provide evidence that the concept was physically tested, but photographs alone do not establish an exact production total or the full sequence of prototype changes. The British Army did not adopt this design as a standard combat tank in the published account. That outcome did not end its history: foreign interest, purchases and technical evaluation made the design relevant to other amphibious programs. Non-adoption by its home army is therefore different from the claim that none were built or that all international influence was merely hypothetical. Sources

Buoyancy, tracks and propulsion

The hull combined a boat-like form with tracked running gear. Flotation material and additional buoyancy arrangements were central to the concept; the account commonly identifies balsa wood in the early design descriptions. The precise shape and construction of those elements need to be tied to a particular vehicle rather than inferred from the surviving museum display. Sources

Water propulsion is described through a propeller and steering arrangement, with differences in the wording of shrouds and rudders among the cited summaries. Land and water steering are related parts of the vehicle's operation but are not necessarily the same mechanism. Sources

The crew and machine-gun position occupied a very restricted protected space. The small rotating weapon enclosure is distinct from the more substantial turret and crew arrangement of a later gun tank. The intended armament was a rifle-caliber machine gun, not a heavy cannon. Detailed sights, ammunition distribution and internal equipment remain less securely documented than the recognizable exterior silhouette. Sources

Specifications with their qualifications

The retained specification uses a weight around 2.17 long tons, approximately 2.2 metric tonnes, and light armor with a commonly quoted maximum around 11 mm. Such figures require attention to units and loading. They do not establish the weight of every export vehicle, later alteration or museum example. Sources

Engine output is explicitly disputed in the cited sources: roughly 90 bhp is common, while another cited summary gives 100 hp. The difference is not resolved here by selecting whichever produces the more attractive power-to-weight ratio. Reported land speeds around 20–27 mph and a water speed around 3.72 mph also remain source-qualified values, not guarantees of field performance. Sources

The later L1E3 appears as a separate follow-on, with different engine and flotation details in the cited material. Similarly, Soviet or Polish amphibious designs may share influence or evaluation relationships without being identical British production variants. Published figures preserves those distinctions. Exports, evaluation and reported combat history

Foreign procurement is one of the least settled numerical parts of the story. Chinese quantities are reported as twenty-nine or thirty-two in different summaries, and the accounts give a small Dutch East Indies purchase along with more uncertain references to other users. Orders, deliveries, vehicles evaluated and later captured examples need separate columns before a family total can be established. Sources

Soviet interest belongs in a technical-evaluation and development relationship. Claims about Japanese ownership likewise need to distinguish original purchase, license arrangements, capture in China and later movement to another theater. Sources

Accounts describe a survivor associated with Rabaul and Kokopo through a specialist wreck-history source, including Chinese ownership, Japanese capture and later display. That is a valuable trail, but the underlying Japanese and Australian records still are uncertain. It does not justify inventing a detailed combat career for the whole export fleet. British demonstrations, overseas service and the postwar history of an individual hull remain separate strands. Sources

Imagery, legacy and unresolved identity

The design's legacy lies in demonstrating both the appeal and difficulty of amphibious reconnaissance vehicles. Combining light armor, tracks and flotation created opportunities but also imposed strict limits on weight, internal space and practical water performance.
