Vickers 6-Ton / Mark E

The Vickers 6-Ton, or Mark E, was developed as a private commercial design rather than as a standard British Army tank.

A private design with a wider market

The Vickers 6-Ton, or Mark E, was developed as a private commercial design rather than as a standard British Army tank. Its appeal was a compact, relatively simple tracked vehicle offered in different fighting arrangements. Although Britain did not adopt it as a normal production service tank, foreign customers bought vehicles, evaluated their design, and developed related programs. Its significance therefore cannot be measured only by British service. Sources

The main distinction was between the twin-machine-gun-turret Type A and the single-turret, gun-armed Type B. Customer-specific weapons, engines, radios, and internal arrangements complicate that division. The Soviet T-26 and Polish 7TP belong in linked histories of influence and development, but they are not additional Vickers-built Mark Es. The Finnish T-26E designation remain distinct from the Soviet T-26 family. Sources

Design and sales development

The project arose from interwar interest in affordable mechanization and from Vickers' export business. Accounts place the design's emergence in 1928 and connects it with the Carden-Loyd engineering tradition, while treating it as a larger turreted tank rather than simply another tankette. The experimental power installation is described as a water-cooled Dorman engine; production arrangements centered on an air-cooled Armstrong Siddeley engine. A single generic engine entry would erase that development history. Sources

The arrangement put the engine at the rear and the drive at the front. Foreign trials exposed both the advantages of the design and its limits in protection, maintenance, and prolonged operation. The account discusses Soviet evaluation and American interest, but a demonstration or influence claim is not evidence that those countries operated a standard fleet of British-built vehicles. Even the frequently repeated interpretation of the letter E as Export remains a terminology point requiring careful sourcing. Sources

Hull, running gear, and crew

The riveted hull used a framework of plates and structural members. Its small size and light armor suited the export light-tank role but left limited room for growth. The suspension used grouped road wheels and leaf-sprung bogies, an arrangement central to the vehicle's recognizable appearance and to the histories of related designs. Maintenance access, track wear, and the space taken by the drive system mattered alongside nominal road speed. Sources

Crew figures vary with the fighting arrangement and customer modifications. Twin turrets divided weapon operation between separate positions, while the single-turret version brought the cannon and machine gun into a shared fighting space. The same caution applies to armor: values around 13 mm are common, but higher figures attached to individual customers cannot be generalized across the entire family. Sources

Weapons, radios, and national changes

The Type A's two machine-gun turrets and the Type B's 47 mm gun with accompanying machine gun were different solutions to the fighting requirement. National weapon substitutions changed the arrangement further. Finnish vehicles are particularly important: the available evidence distinguishes the original British gun option, the later 37 mm Bofors fit, and subsequent 45 mm rearmament. It also records a Finnish hull-mounted Suomi submachine gun. Sources

Ammunition stowage and crew duties changed with the installation. Radios could occupy space otherwise used for ammunition, so the published different stowage figures cannot be combined into a single maximum load. Radio availability itself was uneven. A photograph showing a turret bustle or external fittings is useful, but it does not establish that every delivered tank had a working radio, sight, and complete armament package. Finnish delivery and readiness problems make that distinction especially important. Sources

Performance and industrial accounting

The retained published figures separate mobility from protection and armament. A standard engine rating around 80 horsepower appears alongside higher ratings attributed to specific Finnish or Chinese configurations. Road speed around 35 km/h likewise represents a published value rather than a guarantee of cross-country movement under all conditions. Weight, fuel capacity, endurance, and crew complement need to remain attached to the version being described. Sources

Production is an unresolved accounting question in the available accounts. Small export orders, different arrangements, demonstrators, and later modifications do not fit neatly into one summary total. A museum fact box with a number of vehicles are not, by itself, a complete international production ledger. Production of related designs abroad was not necessarily Vickers factory output. The industrial record involves a distinction between orders, deliveries, vehicles retained by Britain, licensed work, and independent descendants before a definitive family total can be published. Export service and combat

Some users purchased operational vehicles; others evaluated samples or considered proposals. These relationships differ from licensed production and from the adoption of a redesigned descendant. Separate country-focused material can deepen the story without duplicating the common development narrative. Sources

Bolivia's small purchase is described as three tanks, comprising one Type A and two Type Bs. Their Chaco War experience is important, but Published accounts describe detailed tactical claims cautiously. The Chinese account also remains uncertain: it contains quantities and operational narratives that are less secure than the general fact of foreign interest and acquisition. Sources

Polish service in 1939, Finnish employment during the Winter War, and the fate of vehicles ordered for Siam illustrate different outcomes. Polish imports is distinct from 7TP production. Finnish preparation was affected by incomplete fighting equipment and limited readiness; later rearmament produced a new configuration history rather than new Vickers hull production. British use of retained export vehicles was a training expedient, not a reversal that made the Mark E the Army's standard interwar tank. Sources

Variants and descendants

The family tree is best understood as a network of changes and transfers. The Type A/Type B division is only its starting point. Country-specific armament, communications, and trials deserve searchable records where evidence supports them. The Finnish T-26E was a conversion, while the Soviet T-26 and Polish 7TP developed into distinct vehicle families. Sources

Historical significance and image interpretation

The Mark E's influence came from a combination of export availability, a manageable design, and opportunities for other countries to test and adapt it. Buying a vehicle, however, did not automatically supply trained crews, complete weapons, spare parts, or a workable doctrine. Its service histories show why industrial support and preparation belong beside armor and gun size in any assessment. Sources
