UDES tank studies

The Swedish UDES studies were a family of direct-fire combat vehicle investigations rather than a production tank program in the ordinary sense.

The name UDES is usually expanded in English-language sources as Underlagsgrupp Direkt Eld Stridsfordon or a similar Swedish phrase meaning a direct-fire combat vehicle data or study group. Some sources render the first word as Underlag rather than Underlagsgrupp. The safest interpretation is functional rather than literal: UDES was a Swedish study apparatus for producing the technical and economic basis for future direct-fire armored vehicles. Online archival summaries identify the group as part of FMV and associate it with Sven Berge, the engineer already connected to the Strv 103. Bofors and Hägglunds were both contracted or asked to contribute design work. This split matches Sweden’s industrial pattern: Bofors as a major gun and armored-vehicle design actor, Hägglunds as a tracked-vehicle manufacturer with relevant experience in lighter armored platforms.
