Type 87 Chi-I

Japan’s first domestic experimental tank program

The vehicle commonly called Type 87 Chi-I is treated in the cited sources as Japan's Experimental Tank No. 1: a domestic prototype completed in 1927 rather than an operational tank type. It demonstrated that Japanese engineers and industry could construct a complex tracked fighting vehicle. The same trial program also revealed that its weight and arrangement did not meet the Army's practical requirements. Sources

The names remain uncertain. “Type 87 Chi-I” is familiar in later writing, while Experimental Tank No. 1 is the more directly useful project description. The available evidence does not establish that every later label was an official designation used at completion. It also keeps the original prototype and its reported improved state separate from the subsequent Type 89 and later heavy-tank projects. Requirements, design work, and construction

Japan's early experience with imported British and French tanks provided the background to a domestic requirement. The account discusses imported Mark IV, Whippet, and Renault FT vehicles, the creation of early tank organizations, and the need to adapt mechanization to Japanese requirements. Imported vehicles supplied examples and experience; the available evidence does not reduce the resulting prototype to an unchanged foreign design. Sources

Design work began in 1925. The source chronology records a mock-up and design-development stage in 1926, followed by completion at Osaka Arsenal in February 1927. It associates the effort with Army technical personnel and industrial contributions from firms including Kobe Steel and Kisha Seizo. Accounts of a small core design team and a larger engineering organization need not describe the same group, so the article does not force them into one unsupported personnel total. Sources

The ambitious schedule is part of the published industrial story. It cannot, however, erase differences between drawing completion, component manufacture, assembly, and military trial. Those are recorded as separate events rather than one vaguely defined introduction date. Sources

Trials and the weight problem

The prototype was demonstrated in the Fuji area in June 1927. The source compilation describes mobility, obstacle-crossing, and firing trials that encouraged the Army about the feasibility of domestic tank manufacture. That favorable industrial result did not amount to acceptance of the particular vehicle for service. Sources

Weight was the central qualification. Published accounts give different statements about the desired 12- or 16-tonne class and about an actual vehicle around 18 or 20 tonnes. These cannot be averaged into a precise combat weight or dismissed as interchangeable without examining their definitions. A relatively modest engine had to move a large, multi-turreted chassis. The trials therefore supported further development while directing attention toward a lighter and more practical successor. There is no basis here for turning an encouraging demonstration into a claim of sustained battlefield effectiveness. Sources

The multi-turret arrangement

The long hull carried a principal turret and smaller machine-gun positions fore and aft. The crew is commonly given as five, although the allocation of every duty remain uncertain. The arrangement offered weapons in several directions but distributed the crew across separate positions. Published accounts describe internal coordination and workload as design concerns rather than claiming measured combat experience that never occurred. Sources

The main armament is generally described as a 57 mm gun, with two machine guns as the secondary weapons. Exact gun nomenclature is less secure: a “Type 90” identification needs chronology and documentary checking before it is adopted for a vehicle completed in 1927. Machine-gun caliber is also disputed in the compiled material. Published accounts describe that uncertainty instead of creating a mixed configuration from whichever figures appear most often. Armor figures refer to thin protection, with a reported maximum around 17 mm. The available evidence describes ordinary or mild steel in the prototype context, so nominal plate thickness cannot automatically be represented as a tested production-armor standard. Drawings, photographs, and proposal specifications do not establish a complete ballistic performance envelope. Sources

Powertrain, running gear, and crew environment

The original engine is usually described as a petrol V8 delivering approximately 140 hp. The source compilation does not consistently establish its cooling arrangement or every mechanical designation. Published speed figures around 20 km/h likewise require their test basis to remain visible. They are not evidence that the vehicle could sustain that pace indefinitely across broken ground. Sources

The running gear used numerous small road wheels and a complex leaf-sprung arrangement. The account discusses a parallelogram-style suspension and planetary steering, but warns against retroactively assigning the later Japanese bell-crank suspension to this prototype. Its length and mass influenced maneuverability, maintenance, and the design's suitability for the intended role. Sources

Ammunition values also need separation: quantities described as requirements or design allowances differ from later statements about 110 main-gun rounds and 5,000 machine-gun rounds. No source establishes that all were physically stowed in a completed, accepted fighting configuration. Exact radio equipment, sight nomenclature, and some crew functions remain undocumented. The appropriate result is qualified specifications, not a mechanically complete specification sheet manufactured from general knowledge. Sources

Modification and the successor boundary

The improved form is recorded as a modification of the experimental vehicle rather than a second production run. Later sources associate it with changes to weight, engine output, and armament, but their descriptions do not agree sufficiently to establish one final accepted configuration. In particular, a reported 70 mm weapon remains a claim to verify, not an automatic replacement for the original 57 mm description. Sources

The later Type 89 belongs to a separate family. The earlier experiment helped identify the challenges of developing a workable domestic tank, although exact component inheritance remains uncertain. Service, significance, and surviving evidence

Accounts record Japanese experimental and trial use, not an operational unit, export customer, or combat deployment. It establishes no battlefield record from which to calculate losses, tactical success, or enemy assessments. Statements about what the design might have achieved are counterfactual and cannot take the place of its documented testing history. Sources

Its significance is nevertheless substantial within the available evidence: a demanding domestic program produced a working prototype and exposed design tradeoffs that could inform later development. That is different from calling it the first tank ever operated by Japan, which would ignore the imported vehicles. The record does not confirm a surviving original or a precise disposal date. The image set includes broadside and oblique views of the prototype, a small field-trials view, another profile, and a photograph identified as the improved model. Their different dates and configuration states are useful: the improved vehicle cannot be used without qualification to illustrate the original February 1927 arrangement. Sources

Several photographs are reproduced in later Japanese technical histories. The field-trials view is only 600 pixels wide, but documents a context absent from static vehicle portraits. The present collection status of the original photographs is uncertain. Sources
