Army Guide lists current or past inventories totaling 1,251 in its tabulated country list. Some public summaries claim about 2,500. These cannot be harmonized by averaging; Published accounts describe roughly 1,400-1,500 as the best-supported working range while marking higher totals as unresolved secondary-source claims. The Type 62 was a rational, successful light tank for a specific set of terrain and procurement problems, but it became increasingly vulnerable when forced into the role of a conventional battle tank. Its combat record, especially in the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War, is best understood as a warning about doctrinal misuse: mobility and low weight were real advantages, but they did not compensate for thin armor, limited fire control, and exposure to infantry anti-armor weapons when the vehicle was driven into close, prepared defenses. By the late 1950s, the People's Republic of China was trying to build a modern armored force under difficult conditions: Soviet technology had provided the pattern for the Type 59, but China also had to adapt armored warfare to its own infrastructure, border geography, and industrial limits. Design and performance

The Type 62 used a conventional four-crew tank layout: driver in the forward hull, commander/gunner/loader in the turret and fighting compartment, and engine/transmission in the rear. The original Type 62 had simple optics and no modern stabilizer. Tank-AFV stresses that the baseline gun was hampered by poor accuracy because of simplified optics and absence of stabilization. The four-crew arrangement retained a dedicated loader, avoiding the compromises of a three-man autoloaded turret. Ergonomics were constrained by the reduced hull and turret volume. The Type 62 served with China and a range of Asian and African operators. Operator lists vary by source because some authors combine deliveries, peak inventories, later holdings, and uncertain transfers. Tanks Encyclopedia describes mountainous and difficult terrain, substantial PLA infantry forces, and an initial assault using about 200 Type 59/62/63 tanks in northern Vietnam. Tank-AFV states that local Chinese forces had about 200 tanks in northern Vietnam, most of them Type 62s, and that the vehicle suffered heavy losses to RPG fire. This experience is commonly identified as the trigger for Type 62-I improvements, especially the laser rangefinder, heavy-machine-gun shield, and practical survivability changes. Losses and myth control. Public loss claims for the Sino-Vietnamese War vary widely. Some nationalist or popular summaries quote very high Vietnamese claims for Chinese tank losses, while other accounts separate total losses, damaged vehicles, repairable vehicles, and permanently destroyed hulls. The safe account conclusion is not a precise number but a qualitative judgment: the Type 62 could reach terrain where heavier tanks struggled, but it proved vulnerable when used in close infantry-dense fighting against prepared defenses and anti-armor weapons. Legacy and historical evidence

Overall battlefield value. The Type 62 was highly valuable when commanders respected its limits: reconnaissance, infantry-support, exploitation, and difficult-terrain operations. It was far less valuable when substituted for an MBT in close frontal assaults. Its best comparison is not with heavy Western or Soviet MBTs but with other postwar light armor that traded protection for strategic and tactical mobility. Sources

The Type 62’s legacy is partly technical and partly doctrinal. Technically, it proved that China could create a light tank from a known design lineage rather than merely operate foreign-derived medium tanks. Doctrinally, it confirmed that China’s geography required specialized armored solutions.
