Type 3 Ka-Chi

The Type 3 Ka-Chi was not a conventional medium tank adapted casually for wading; it was a purpose-built naval amphibious armored vehicle designed for the Imperial Japanese Navy at a moment when Japan was losing the operational initiative in the Pacific.

The vehicle is described as family JPN-KACHI, with a development/start year of 1943, production end in 1945, an estimated production quantity of about nineteen vehicles, a Type 1 47 mm gun, seven crew, and a combat weight of roughly twenty-eight tonnes with flotation equipment. The vehicle mattered because it represented the high-water mark of Japan's wartime amphibious tank effort. The earlier Type 2 Ka-Mi was more numerous and far more important in actual service, but the Ka-Chi was larger, more heavily armed, and more elaborate. Its size, crew demands, and naval-specific hull arrangements made it a specialized solution for a very narrow operational problem. Published accounts describe the Type 3 Ka-Chi as a tank family centered on one limited-production amphibious vehicle rather than as a single isolated prototype. Included are the production Type 3 Ka-Chi, the immediate Type 2 Ka-Mi predecessor relationship, the Type 1 Chi-He/47 mm gun technical lineage, and the uncertain Type 5 To-Ku successor/prototype connection. Excluded are general Japanese medium-tank families such as Type 97 Chi-Ha, Type 1 Chi-He, and Type 3 Chi-Nu except where they clarify chassis, turret, gun, or industrial lineage. Sources

The Japanese Navy did not frame these vehicles only in Army-style tank terminology. The Japanese designation "uchibitei" is commonly translated as "launch" or "special launch," a naval naming convention that helped mask and bureaucratically separate amphibious tank programs. In English-language armor literature, however, Ka-Chi is properly handled as an amphibious tank because it had a turreted gun, tracked armored hull, swimming equipment, and intended use as an armored landing support vehicle. The Ka-Chi developed as a larger naval successor to the Ka-Mi and as a heavily modified use of the Type 1 Chi-He medium-tank design stream. The cited accounts summarizes the parentage as "larger naval amphibious tank based on Chi-He concepts." Open reference sources similarly connect it to the Chi-He chassis or to an extensively modified Chi-He base, but it is not established as a simple float-equipped Chi-He. The Ka-Chi required a different hull form, added flotation devices, waterproofing, propulsion screws, a tall air intake or snorkel arrangement, and a crew model suited to operating both afloat and ashore. Design and performance

The Ka-Chi used a turreted tracked armored layout with detachable flotation structures at the bow and stern. Its fighting compartment, engine compartment, and flotation gear made it much larger than its Type 1 Chi-He relative. With pontoons fitted, published specifications place length at about 10.3 meters, width at about 3.0 meters, height at about 3.82 meters, and weight at roughly 28.2 to 28.7 tonnes. The turret has been described as a modified version of the Shinhoto Chi-Ha/Chi-He gun turret family, adapted for the Type 1 47 mm gun and amphibious operation. A distinctive enlarged or raised cupola arrangement helped keep the commander's opening above water during swimming operations. The production story of the Ka-Chi is short and uncertain. The cited accounts and Tank Encyclopedia use roughly nineteen vehicles. Other summaries provide a range of twelve to nineteen. The program probably suffered from the same late-war Japanese constraints that affected other vehicle programs: shortages of skilled labor, material, fuel, shipping capacity, and competing aircraft and naval ship priorities. Export users, captured operational use, Lend-Lease use, and postwar training use are not documented. No surviving operational Ka-Chi is known from the reviewed sources. The stronger working conclusion is that verified combat use is unproven. Kwajalein and the Marshall Islands were central to the Pacific amphibious campaign, and official U.S. context sources confirm the scale and importance of Operation Flintlock. However, that operational context does not itself prove Ka-Chi presence. Legacy and historical evidence

Against the Type 2 Ka-Mi, the Ka-Chi offered greater size, armor, and firepower. Its 47 mm gun was a meaningful improvement over the Ka-Mi's 37 mm armament, and its Chi-He-related medium-tank lineage gave it a more robust basis for shore fighting. The cost was weight, complexity, crew size, and production difficulty. The Ka-Mi was the more historically important vehicle because it was built in meaningful numbers and used in actual island operations; the Ka-Chi was the more ambitious design. Sources

Against the M4 Sherman, the Ka-Chi was badly overmatched in conventional tank combat. Its 47 mm gun and 10-50 mm armor could threaten lighter targets and perhaps side aspects under favorable conditions, but it was not a true peer of Allied medium tanks in protection, firepower, radio integration, production scale, or combined-arms support. Any scenario in which Ka-Chi mattered would depend on surprise, difficult terrain, landing timing, and targets other than frontal engagements with Allied medium armor. Sources

Overall battlefield value would have been narrow. The vehicle could have been valuable in a small landing against lightly defended beaches or as an unexpected reinforcement to an isolated island, but it could not alter late-war strategic dynamics. The Ka-Chi's direct influence on postwar tank design appears limited. Japan's postwar armored forces developed under entirely different strategic, industrial, and legal conditions, and no line of continuity from Ka-Chi to postwar Japanese tanks was found. Its legacy is instead historical and conceptual: it is one of the clearest examples of a navy trying to solve armored beach assault through a dedicated swimming tank rather than through improvised flotation gear.
