Tsar Tank / Lebedenko / Netopyr

The Tsar Tank, also known as the Lebedenko or Netopyr project, was a Russian Empire experiment in crossing battlefield obstacles with very large wheels. Its familiar outline combines two huge forward wheels with a much smaller rear support. It was not a tracked vehicle.

The full-size machine was assembled for testing in 1915. Its trial history is dominated by the rear support becoming bogged down, defeating the promise of the enormous front wheels. Wheel arrangement and propulsion

The enormous forward wheels were intended to carry the machine over obstacles that would stop smaller wheels. Their size alone did not solve the behavior of the whole vehicle on soft or uneven ground. The small rear support and the distribution of the load were crucial to the result. Sources

The account commonly describes two Maybach engines of about 240 hp each, while preserving alternative accounts of rating and engine identity. These are not interchangeable confirmed specifications. A projected speed of about 17 km/h appears in the available evidence, but it is not established as a sustained operating speed achieved in service.
