Historical overview

It does not merge the earlier TR-77-580/TR-580 into the TR-85 family, but it includes TR-77/TR-580 lineage because the TR-85 cannot be understood without it. Sources

The major technical goal was to move beyond the TR-77-580 by using a more powerful domestic engine/transmission solution, revised suspension, and improved fire-control package while retaining a 100 mm rifled gun. Secondary accounts describe the TR-85-800 as using an 830 hp 8VS-A2T2 diesel and a THM-5800 hydromechanical transmission; the later ROMARM TR-85-M1 datasheet gives 860 hp for the modernized vehicle. MILMAG reported a BSDA 2026 prototype under the Revitalizat Sisteme Modernizate package and stated that the modernization decision covered 108 TR-85/M1 vehicles in two batches of 54. Design and performance
The TR-85 uses a conventional tank layout: driver forward in the hull, fighting compartment in the center under the turret, and engine/transmission at the rear. Its most visible difference from a basic T-54/T-55-type layout is the longer chassis with six road wheels per side, required by the larger powerpack and Romanian redesign path. The tank retained a four-person crew because its 100 mm gun was manually loaded, unlike the three-person autoloader arrangement of the Soviet T-72. Sources

Compared with the T-55, the TR-85 represented a meaningful Romanian redesign path: more road wheels, more power, new fire-control ambitions, and later NATO-oriented modernization.
