Overview and classification
The Tank, Mark VII was a British attempt to apply hydraulic transmission to a heavy tank during the First World War. That earlier trial provided a development relationship, not proof that the final Mark VII already existed in its later form. Published accounts describe Brown Brothers of Edinburgh's development contract in October 1917 and reports a prototype ready in July 1918. It distinguishes an order for seventy-four more from an intended total around seventy-five. The Armistice then removed the urgency that had sustained numerous late-war tank projects. The hydraulic system and its consequences
The Mark VII's drive used a petrol engine with hydraulic pumps and motors to transmit power to the tracks. Changing the flow provided a means of varying track speed, promising more direct and smoother control than the earlier multi-person procedure. Hydraulic control did not make energy losses disappear. Heat rejection, oil circulation and cooling became central requirements. The vehicle's technical history therefore cannot be reduced to “a tank with easy steering.” The relevant question was whether that steering system could remain cool, reliable, maintainable and producible in service conditions. Hypothetical employment would have resembled that of other heavy tanks, but it would be misleading to write a service section as though the project had demonstrated those tactics under fire. A photograph cataloged as a Mark VII at Bovington in 1928 indicates that at least one example was present there at that time. It does not settle the vehicle's complete history, exact disposal date or the fate of every completed machine. The inconsistent identification does not establish a completed Mark VII bridge-layer.
